Frederick Ma

Frederick Ma Si-hang . As a former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the , he was a popular figure with the public and with legislators of all parties. He is also the cousin of Eric Tsang, a Hong Kong famous artist.

Biography

Ma declared himself to be a Christian, and was affectionately known in Hong Kong as "Fat Ma" because of his portly physique.

Ma was previously Chief Financial Officer of PCCW, and before then a private banker with JP Morgan Private Bank, part of JP Morgan Chase. Ma gave up an annual salary of in excess of 10 million to join the government.

As a 'cabinet-level' political appointee under the Principal Officials Accountability System, he was a member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong. Ma entered the government in July 2002 as Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, and was appointed to Secretary for Commerce in July 2007.

In the early weeks of his government tenure, Ma he weathered the resignation calls for the "penny stocks fiasco" in July 2002, but has since earned recognition as one of the more astute and popular politicians, according to opinion polls. Ma has been praised by the for his even-handedness with all political parties. Ma's approval/disapproval rating stood at 55 percent/9 percent as at early July 2008.

As Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, one of Ma's jobs was to sell the the Tsang administration's proposals, which were abandoned for lack of support in December 2006.

On 24 June 2008, Ma resigned from the government for health reasons. He was diagnosed with "cavernous hemangioma" and "" in the brain.

Edelweiss Cheung

Edelweiss Cheung is the current , having won the pageant held on 19 July 2008. Edelweiss Cheung is 22 years old and stands 180cm tall, making her the tallest ever holder of the title. Edelweiss will represent Hong Kong at Miss Chinese International 2009 and Miss International 2008 in Macau. After her win as Miss Hong Kong 2008, there has been criticism in her winning the crown because she smokes and kissed her boyfriend in public. There has been rumors saying that her win was upon her family's wealth and ties with TVB.

Dickson Poon

Dickson Poon, is a Hong Kong businessman in the luxury goods retailing sector. He owns various companies including Harvey Nichols and S.T. Dupont.

He co-founded D&B Films with Sammo Hung which released such action films as the ''In The Line of Duty'' series,
''Hong Kong 1941'' and ''Legacy of Rage'', before the film company closed down in the early 1990s.

He was formerly married to actress Michelle Yeoh.

Da-Wen Sun

Sun Dawen , born in Chaozhou , Guangdong , China , known as "Da-Wen Sun".

Biography

Born in Southern China, Professor Da-Wen Sun is an internationally recognized figure for his leadership in food engineering research and education. His main research activities include cooling, drying and refrigeration processes and systems, quality and safety of food products, bioprocess simulation and optimisation, and computer vision technology. Especially, his innovative studies on vacuum cooling of cooked meats, pizza quality inspection by computer vision, and edible films for shelf-life extension of fruit and vegetables have been widely reported in national and international media. Results of his work have been published in over 180 peer reviewed journal papers and more than 200 conference papers.

He received a first class BSc Honours and MSc in Mechanical Engineering, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering in China before working in various universities in Europe. He became the first national to be permanently employed in an University when he was appointed College Lecturer at National University of Ireland, Dublin in 1995, and was then continuously promoted in the shortest possible time to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and full Professor. Dr Sun is now Professor and Director of the Food Refrigeration and Computerised Food Technology Research Group in University College Dublin.

As a leading educator in food engineering, Professor Sun has significantly contributed to the field of food engineering. He has trained many PhD students, who have made their own contributions to the industry and academia. He has also given lectures on advances in food engineering on a regular basis in academic institutions internationally and delivered keynote speeches at international conferences. As a recognised authority in food engineering, he has been conferred adjunct/ visiting/ consulting professorships from ten top universities in China including Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Harbin Institute of Technology, China Agricultural University, South China University of Technology, Southern Yangtze University, and so on. In recognition of his significant contribution to food engineering worldwide and for his outstanding leadership in the field, the International Commission of Agricultural Engineering awarded him the CIGR Merit Award in 2000 and again in 2006, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers based in the UK named him “Food Engineer of the Year 2004”.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers. He has also received numerous awards for teaching and research excellence, including the President’s Research Fellowship, and twice receiving the President’s Research Award of University College Dublin. He is a member of CIGR Executive Board and Honorary Vice-President of CIGR, Editor-in-Chief of Food and Bioprocess Technology – an International Journal , Series Editor of “Contemporary Food Engineering” book series , former Editor of Journal of Food Engineering , and editorial board member for Journal of Food Process Engineering , Sensing and Instrumentation for Food Quality and Safety and Czech Journal of Food Sciences. He is also a Chartered Engineer registered in the UK Engineering Council.

Chua Lam

Chua Lam is a columnist, food critic and occasional television host in Hong Kong and Japan. He was also a for the Hong Kong movie studio Golden Harvest.

Background

Chua Lam's father, Chua Boon Suan, hailed from the Jio Mung Chua village in Chaozhou, and later migrated to Singapore. His father worked in a high-ranking post at the Shaw Brothers Studio and his father died in 1997.
Chua Lam currently is staying in Hong Kong.

Choo Hoey

Choo Hoey is a Singaporean musician and conductor. A Chinese, his father, Choo Seng, was an immigrant from Chaozhou and his mother from Nanjing.

Choo Hoey's family immigrated to Singapore in 1946. He is an alumnus of The Chinese High School. In 1958, Choo debuted his career with the Belgian National Orchestra. He has appeared with many famous European orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Société du Conservatoire, Tonhalle Zurich, Oslo Philharmonic and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

From 1979 to 1996, Choo Hoey was the Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, a premier Asian orchestra, and has continued to appear in Europe as a guest conductor. He is currently Conductor Emeritus. He has conducted orchestras like the Hong Kong Philharmonic and China Philharmonic in Beijing. Soloists who have worked with Choo include Li Chuan Yun, Lynnette Seah, , Kiho Ishikawa, Kun Woo Paik, just to name a few.

Choo is married to Alexandra, a Greek archaeologist. They had two sons.

Chim Pui Chung

Chim Pui Chung is the member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong , representing financial services industry in functional constituencies seats. He is a businessman who is the of several companies.

He was also the legislative councillor from 1991 to 1998 until he was jailed for conspiring to forge share documents in 1998. After his release in 1999, he was re-elected unopposed to the legislative councillor in financial services constituency in 2004.

In 2005, he declared to take part in the after Tung Chee Hwa resigned from the . However, his bid failed when he received only 21 nominations from the Election Committee, less than the minimum requirement of 100. As a result, Donald Tsang was declared the uncontested winner.
