Lee Cheuk-yan

Lee Cheuk Yan is the member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong and the General Secretary of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions. He emigrated from Mainland China to Hong Kong in 1959. He graduated from the with a bachelor degree in civil engineering.

Since his university days, he has been a labour and pro-democracy activist. During the student-led Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, he collected donations from Hong Kong and travelled to Beijing to hand-over the funds to student protesters at Tiananmen Square. He was detained by the authorities there and made to sign a confession letter before being allowed to return to Hong Kong.

Since the events of 1989, Lee has remained a standing committee member of the pro-democracy group, The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China.

In 1995, Mr Lee was elected unopposed in a byelection of the . He won and was re-elected four times since then. Mr Lee has been a lawmaker for more than a decade, except a brief period during 1997 and 1998, when the sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred to the People's Republic of China, and the Legislative Council temporarily became a Provisional Legislative Council which was filled with people indirectly hand picked by Beijing.

Mr Lee is married to Elizabeth Tang, the chairperson of the Hong Kong People's Alliance on WTO.

Lawrence J. Lau

Lawrence J. Lau is a Hong Kong economist and the Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before coming to the CUHK he was an economics professor at Stanford University.

Background


He was born on December 12, 1944 in Zunyi, Guizhou with family roots in Chaozhou, Guangdong. His maternal grandfather was famed calligrapher and Kuomingtang leader of Shaanxi Shen. Lau has a son, who recently graduated from Gunn High School in Palo Alto, California.

Study and career


He received his secondary education from St. Paul's Co-educational College in Hong Kong, his B.S. degree in Physics and Economics, with Great Distinction, from Stanford University in 1964, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966 and 1969 respectively. He joined the faculty of the Department of Economics of Stanford University in 1966 and was promoted to Professor of Economics in 1976. In 1992, he was named the first Kwoh-Ting Li Professor of Economic Development at Stanford University. From 1992 to 1996, he served as a Co-Director of the Asia/Pacific Research Center of Stanford University. From 1997 to 1999, he served as the Director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research of Stanford University. His specialized fields are Economic Development, Economic Growth, and the Economies of East Asia, including China. He developed one of the first econometric models of China, in 1966, and has continued to revise and update his model since then.

Lau has been elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a member of Tau Beta Pi, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, an Academician of Academia Sinica, a Member of the Conference for Research in Income and Wealth, an Overseas Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge, England, an Honorary Member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and an Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences. He has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa, by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has been a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow and a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He is the author or editor of five books and more than one hundred and sixty articles and notes in professional publications.

Lau is active in both academic and professional services. He is an Honorary Research Fellow of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai; an Honorary Professor of the Institute of Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jilin University, Nanjing University, People's University, Shantou University, Southeast University, and the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, Beijing; an International Adviser, National Bureau of Statistics, People's Republic of China and a member of the Board of Directors of the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, Taipei.

He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in June 2004.

Lam Tai-fai

Dr. Lam Tai Fai, , is the member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong . He is also the appointed member of Shatin District Council. He is the managing director of Peninsula Knitters Limited, a textiles and garment company owned by Henry Tang, the Chief Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong. He is the member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

He also sponsored a secondary school in Sha Tin, New Territories, named Lam Tai Fai College. He also acts as the supervisor of the school.

Jimmy Heung

Jimmy Heung Wah-Sing , is a former Hong Kong film producer, , and presenter. He is the younger brother of film producer/presenter Charles Heung.

Career


Alongside his brother, Jimmy was often hailed as one of Hong Kong's most successful presenters/producers, and one of the most controversial due to his family's background. Heung is widely suspected of ties to one of Hong Kong's largest and most powerful organized crime groups, the Sun Yee On Triad. His father, Heung Chin, founded the Sun Yee On in 1919..

The two became partners in the formation of Win's Entertainment Ltd., However, the partnership ended in 1992 as Charles felt that Jimmy's style of negotiating business, too closely resembled that of a triad member. Following the partnership split between Charles and Jimmy, Win's Entertainment Ltd. later became a subsidiary for Charles' production company China Star Entertainment Group, which he formed in 1992. While Charles sees Jimmy as a "good triad," it is widely believed that Jimmy has moved on, and supposedly runs the triad to this day.

Films


Jimmy was the producer of films featuring some of Hong Kong's cinematic icons. This included films such as the ''Fight Back to School'' trilogy, and the ''God of Gamblers'' series. A majority of the stars he highlighted as a presenter included Stephen Chow, Andy Lau, Chow Yun Fat, Rosamund Kwan, and Ng Man Tat. Jimmy made his directorial debut with the 1992 film ''Casino Raiders'' which he co-directed with Wong Jing, with his brother Charles in a supporting role. Huang Songyou

Huang Songyou is the Vice-President of the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China.

Biography


Huang was born in Shantou, Guangdong in December 1957. He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Southwest University of Political Science & Law in 1982.

After graduation, Huang worked as a judge in Guangdong High People's Court. He was elected to be the President of Zhanjiang Intermediate People's Court in 1997.

Huang was appointed by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress as the Head of the Civil Law Tribunal of the Supreme People's Court and member of its Judicial Committee on June 28, 1999. He was appointed by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress as the Vice President of the Supreme People's Court on December 28, 2002.

George Yeo

George Yong-Boon Yeo , or George Yeo, is the in Singapore. Ethnically Chinese, he belongs to the Teochew dialect group. He was a student of and Saint Joseph's Institution. He was an SAF Overseas Merit Scholar and a President's Scholar. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General, prior to becoming a politician. Yeo is married to Jennifer Leong and they have one daughter and three sons.

George Yeo is the Member of Parliament for Aljunied Group Representation Constituency since 1988 but the team he led in the managed only 56.1% of the votes compared with 43.9% garnered by new faces in the Workers' Party. This was despite the James Gomez saga plaguing the opposition. Fu Haifeng

Fu Haifeng is a Chinese badminton player from the People's Republic of China.

Fu competed for China in badminton at the 2004 Summer Olympics in men's doubles with partner Cai Yun. They had a bye in the first round and defeated Keita Masuda and Tadashi Ohtsuka of Japan in the second. In the quarterfinals, Fu and Cai lost to Jens Eriksen and Martin Lundgaard Hansen of Denmark 3-15, 15-11, 15-8.

Badminton champion Fu Haifeng has also set the official world smash record June 3, 2005. The actual bird speed was measured at 332 km/h , making badminton the fastest racquet sport in the world.

Together with Cai Yun he became the in men's doubles.

At the 2008 Summer Beijing Olympics, he competed in the men's doubles with partner Cai Yun and won the silver medal, losing to the top seeds Kido Markis and Henry Setiawan of indonesia.

Frederick Ma

Frederick Ma Si-hang . As a former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the , he was a popular figure with the public and with legislators of all parties. He is also the cousin of Eric Tsang, a Hong Kong famous artist.

Biography



Ma declared himself to be a Christian, and was affectionately known in Hong Kong as "Fat Ma" because of his portly physique.

Ma was previously Chief Financial Officer of PCCW, and before then a private banker with JP Morgan Private Bank, part of JP Morgan Chase. Ma gave up an annual salary of in excess of 10 million to join the government.

As a 'cabinet-level' political appointee under the Principal Officials Accountability System, he was a member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong. Ma entered the government in July 2002 as Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, and was appointed to Secretary for Commerce in July 2007.

In the early weeks of his government tenure, Ma he weathered the resignation calls for the "penny stocks fiasco" in July 2002, but has since earned recognition as one of the more astute and popular politicians, according to opinion polls. Ma has been praised by the for his even-handedness with all political parties. Ma's approval/disapproval rating stood at 55 percent/9 percent as at early July 2008.

As Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, one of Ma's jobs was to sell the the Tsang administration's proposals, which were abandoned for lack of support in December 2006.

On 24 June 2008, Ma resigned from the government for health reasons. He was diagnosed with "cavernous hemangioma" and "" in the brain.

Edelweiss Cheung

Edelweiss Cheung is the current , having won the pageant held on 19 July 2008. Edelweiss Cheung is 22 years old and stands 180cm tall, making her the tallest ever holder of the title. Edelweiss will represent Hong Kong at Miss Chinese International 2009 and Miss International 2008 in Macau. After her win as Miss Hong Kong 2008, there has been criticism in her winning the crown because she smokes and kissed her boyfriend in public. There has been rumors saying that her win was upon her family's wealth and ties with TVB.

Dickson Poon

Dickson Poon, is a Hong Kong businessman in the luxury goods retailing sector. He owns various companies including Harvey Nichols and S.T. Dupont.

He co-founded D&B Films with Sammo Hung which released such action films as the ''In The Line of Duty'' series,

Biography


Born in Southern China, Professor Da-Wen Sun is an internationally recognized figure for his leadership in food engineering research and education. His main research activities include cooling, drying and refrigeration processes and systems, quality and safety of food products, bioprocess simulation and optimisation, and computer vision technology. Especially, his innovative studies on vacuum cooling of cooked meats, pizza quality inspection by computer vision, and edible films for shelf-life extension of fruit and vegetables have been widely reported in national and international media. Results of his work have been published in over 180 peer reviewed journal papers and more than 200 conference papers.

He received a first class BSc Honours and MSc in Mechanical Engineering, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering in China before working in various universities in Europe. He became the first national to be permanently employed in an University when he was appointed College Lecturer at National University of Ireland, Dublin in 1995, and was then continuously promoted in the shortest possible time to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and full Professor. Dr Sun is now Professor and Director of the Food Refrigeration and Computerised Food Technology Research Group in University College Dublin.

As a leading educator in food engineering, Professor Sun has significantly contributed to the field of food engineering. He has trained many PhD students, who have made their own contributions to the industry and academia. He has also given lectures on advances in food engineering on a regular basis in academic institutions internationally and delivered keynote speeches at international conferences. As a recognised authority in food engineering, he has been conferred adjunct/ visiting/ consulting professorships from ten top universities in China including Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Harbin Institute of Technology, China Agricultural University, South China University of Technology, Southern Yangtze University, and so on. In recognition of his significant contribution to food engineering worldwide and for his outstanding leadership in the field, the International Commission of Agricultural Engineering awarded him the CIGR Merit Award in 2000 and again in 2006, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers based in the UK named him “Food Engineer of the Year 2004”.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers. He has also received numerous awards for teaching and research excellence, including the President’s Research Fellowship, and twice receiving the President’s Research Award of University College Dublin. He is a member of CIGR Executive Board and Honorary Vice-President of CIGR, Editor-in-Chief of Food and Bioprocess Technology – an International Journal , Series Editor of “Contemporary Food Engineering” book series , former Editor of Journal of Food Engineering , and editorial board member for Journal of Food Process Engineering , Sensing and Instrumentation for Food Quality and Safety and Czech Journal of Food Sciences. Chua Lam

Chua Lam is a columnist, food critic and occasional television host in Hong Kong and Japan. He was also a for the Hong Kong movie studio Golden Harvest.

Chua Lam's father, Chua Boon Suan, hailed from the Jio Mung Chua village in Chaozhou, and later migrated to Singapore. His father worked in a high-ranking post at the Shaw Brothers Studio and his father died in 1997.

Choo Hoey

Choo Hoey is a Singaporean musician and conductor. A Chinese, his father, Choo Seng, was an immigrant from Chaozhou and his mother from Nanjing.

Choo Hoey's family immigrated to Singapore in 1946. He is an alumnus of The Chinese High School. In 1958, Choo debuted his career with the Belgian National Orchestra. He has appeared with many famous European orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Société du Conservatoire, Tonhalle Zurich, Oslo Philharmonic and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

From 1979 to 1996, Choo Hoey was the Music Director of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, a premier Asian orchestra, and has continued to appear in Europe as a guest conductor. He is currently Conductor Emeritus. He has conducted orchestras like the Hong Kong Philharmonic and China Philharmonic in Beijing. Soloists who have worked with Choo include Li Chuan Yun, Lynnette Seah, , Kiho Ishikawa, Kun Woo Paik, just to name a few.

Choo is married to Alexandra, a Greek archaeologist. They had two sons.

Chim Pui Chung

Chim Pui Chung is the member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong , representing financial services industry in functional constituencies seats. He is a businessman who is the of several companies.

He was also the legislative councillor from 1991 to 1998 until he was jailed for conspiring to forge share documents in 1998. After his release in 1999, he was re-elected unopposed to the legislative councillor in financial services constituency in 2004.

In 2005, he declared to take part in the after Tung Chee Hwa resigned from the . However, his bid failed when he received only 21 nominations from the Election Committee, less than the minimum requirement of 100. As a result, Donald Tsang was declared the uncontested winner.

Chan Tung , Hong Kong’s famous chef, was born in Puning, Guangdong. He was famous for teaching cooking in the .

Chan learnt cooking in his father’s restaurant since he was 10 years old. However, he did not gain any special treatment. In contrary, his father was particularly strict to Chan’s performance. Carrie Lam

Carrie Lam , born in 25 March 1980 with family roots in Chaozhou, Guangdong, is a Hong Kong television presenter and actress affiliated with TVB. She was also Miss Hong Kong 2005 2nd runner-up.

Miss Hong Kong


Carrie competed in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2005 alongside Tracy Ip. They were in the same Top 40 group, The Modelling Group, competing to be in the top 20. In the end, Tracy won the crown while Carrie took 2nd runner-up.

Miss International


Typically, TVB sent the second runners-up of Miss Hong Kong to represent Hong Kong in the . As Carrie is 2nd runner-up of 2005, she should have competed in Miss International 2005. However, due to the Miss International entry deadline to be before the Miss Hong Kong pageant took place, TVB opted to send Miss Hong Kong 2004 1st Runner-Up, Queenie Chu to the pageant instead.

Life after the pageants


She signed an artist contract with TVB after her reign was over entered the entertainment business. She currently hosts the TVB show "E-Buzz".
